Sweden bets on Layher for the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest

For the finals the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 on 29 May the European countries sent their representatives back into the race, most of them winners of national qualification competitions. In Sweden, which has its own contest “Melodifestivalen” since 1959, the qualification competition over the years has turned into the most-viewed entertainment show for the broadcasting company SVT. The semi-final took place mid of February in the Göransson Arena at Sandviken – normally the scene of Sweden’s most popular team sport Bandy, a forerunner of today’s ice hockey.

Since the sports facility which was opened in 2009 provides space for only 4,000 spectators, Layher customer “Yellow Line” was commissioned to build a temporary grandstand. To ensure excellent view for all spectators, they used the Layher Arena in the system EV 86/33 with a special pitch of 33 centimetres. It is part of an extensive complete Event product range with which Layher has offered since 1985 system solutions according to customer requirements for every possible event: stages and grandstands, solutions for weather protection, special supporting structures for lighting and sound equipment as well as scaffolding systems for the construction of towers or as a substructure for indoor buildings. Thanks to flexible system technology and handy individual components, the products not only promise short dismantling times, but are also permanently available due to series production with generous warehousing.

Quick installation is also ensured by the use of new bucket seats with spring folding mechanism which can be installed without any tools and, above all, most flexibly. This was necessary because the organizers had already started selling tickets before contracting and therefore the construction had to be precisely matched to the number of tickets sold. Moreover, in order to ensure full view for the spectators in the front rows, Layher has also developed short-term an aluminium guardrail frame including a transparent plastic deck as special part. A service for the customer where an experienced team is always there to devise tailored solutions.

Shortly after receipt of the order 10 trucks with 165 tons of Layher material drove directly to Sandviken where it took a team of 10 scaffolders 6 days to assemble the construction with 4,300 seats. The organizers of the “Melodifestivalen 2010” were impressed: “Safe, practical and a great look”, was their summary of the Layher grandstand. Amongst other things, they liked the fully closed ground level with toe boards which prevents the spectators looking down and a possible fear of height. Thus the well-attended event was a hit: Thanks to the professional performance of “Yellow Line” – and the ideal Event construction by Layher.
