Layher sheds Light on the Dark

This “lighthouse” in the industrial park of the Bavarian-Swabian city wants to draw attention to the headquarters of Roma Rolladen und Tore GmbH. Founded as recently as 1980, this company has become market leader for front mounted shutters in Germany. The young enterprise is also striking new, innovative paths when it comes to communication.

According to the Corporate Identity Guidelines for Architecture, Roma is currently redesigning the factory premises purchased from another company. As the company buildings stretch along the railway line for several hundred metres, especially the façade facing the railway tracks was to be spiced up optically. Part of the “skyline” is a now shut-down chipped wood silo. As tearing down the silo would have been uneconomical, the redesign of the 24 metres high tower was the first step of the marketing concept. Under the header “Corporate Lighting” the company here used light as a design element, a medium that has always stirred the emotions of humans.

For the new “make-up” the formerly white tower was painted black and equipped with metal consoles and subsequently a cover made of synthetic fabric. For the façade that covers approximately 670 m², the local scaffold contractor Gerstmayer erected a 28 metres high work scaffold. Quick as lightning – with the Layer SpeedyScaf. “Due to the diameter of eight metres a circular scaffold was the optimal solution. We built it with ten bays à 2.57 metres. Owing to the shape, we constructed each bay separately. At the same time the construction work required a clearance of 60 centimetres between the scaffold and the tower. Thanks to the wedge housing stop of the SpeedyScaf we were able to install the necessary interior guardrails in no time at all: insert, twist, done”, says Werner Gerstmayer.

A three man team erected the complete scaffold in three days. The only obstacle was the wind. Due to bad weather conditions the scaffold erection had to be suspended occasionally. The construction work on the tower itself took approximately four months. As the icing on the cake, LED lights were installed on the cover at the very end. Today the tower glistens every night anew – and always different. By changing the frequency the colour can be changed at will. According to mood, according to season. But always to please the rail travellers.
