In the second largest town of Bavaria, the laying of the cornerstone for the St. Ludwig church took place in 1923. The affiliated monastery served as a domicile for the Bavarian Franciscan province for a long time. In September 2006 the friars abandoned the monastery and the affiliated parish St. Ludwig. Their motives were – amongst other things – the ageing of the friars and a lack of new blood, but also financial reasons: high energy and maintenance costs and upcoming clean-up operations.

In order to lower the costs, by order of the Catholic Church Foundation now the grounds, on which besides the church and the attached monastery there are also two kindergarten buildings, the priest’s office and the monastery garden, will be completely re-organized. This does not only include the restoration of the roof and façade of the St. Ludwig church, but also a new interior painting and the construction of a church café, as well as the conversion of the monastery into apartments. The Church Foundation will allegedly spend 25 million Euro for this “savings measure”. For the clean-up operations, a team of three scaffolders erected and modified within one month a work scaffold with a surface of almost 10,000 square metres. In order to be as effective as possible – and to access the roof as quickly as possible – the scaffold company Seubert from Oberhaid employed for the first time the new Layher Allround STAR Frame. The expectations where clearly defined: quicker assembly – better cost effectiveness.

“We often erect scaffolds for churches. Especially at the spires I like to work with the extremely flexible Allround scaffold. With it, I can adapt my scaffold optimally to any structural shape”, says owner Karl-Heinz Seubert. “With the new STAR Frame I can realize even surfaces much quicker due to the fewer components and the lighter weight, and thanks to the compatibility with the Allround system I’m just as flexible. The guardrail is also very lightweight and easy to handle. In Nuremberg, the time saving thanks to the STAR was at least 20 per cent. Now all we need is the 1.09 metre version.”

Today, Nuremberg has a nice view of the St. Ludwig church – and of its new roof, for which the responsible persons had a unique idea: on the occasion of the autumn festival, parishioners had the opportunity to “eternize” their names on the new roof tiles after making a small donation.
