Layher's Plant II in Operation

Layher started with the building of a second plant in November 2008, despite being fully aware of the economic crisis – and in so doing it charted its course towards a successful future. To make room for future capacity increases, the management decided to centralize steel production at the main plant in Eibensbach, while relocating the production of aluminium and wooden parts to neighbouring Güglingen. To do so, a building complex totalling 32,000 square meters of space was put up on a 6.8 hectare plot. This complex houses three production and four warehouse buildings, an office building with employee amenities, its own access road and 120 parking spaces. The futuristic architecture of the office building is not only a visual highlight, but also a symbol of how Layher is facing the future with determination. Layher upheld its tradition of strengthening the local economy by placing the orders for all the building work with regional partners.

During construction of the complex, built using reinforced concrete supports and laminated wooden beams, the aim was to provide the optimum conditions necessary for processing wood and aluminium. At the same time, considerable value was attached to energy efficiency for the benefit of both personnel and the environment, and all environmental regulations were met and indeed exceeded. For noise and heat prevention reasons, the buildings were for example better insulated than required by law. All these measures have ensured that no air or noise pollution can escape to the outside. The technical equipment too is the best possible with the state of the art. Extraction and waste air systems are frequency-controlled and incorporate the latest filter technology, ensuring energy-efficient operation thanks both to the recovery of air and energy and also to the directly fired heating systems.

The new buildings mean that the entire production process is indoors, ensuring protection from weather effects. That includes storage and processing of raw materials and semi-finished parts, and dispatching of the finished products. The production sequence too has been optimized: fast throughput is assured by readily accessible storage spaces and by the short distances the raw materials and semi-finished parts have to travel before reaching the production facilities and then the loading area. The first machinery is already in productive use, while the remaining machinery is being relocated as quickly as possible from the main plant in Eibensbach to the new production plant, where it will come into service on schedule. Landscaping of the entire property using local trees and shrubs has been ordered and will be completed once the weather permits.

The construction of the second production plant is the final step in Layher's three-stage expansion plan to safeguard in the future too the high quality of its products and their short-notice availability. A new dispatch and logistics centre was inaugurated at the main plant in Eibensbach in 2003. To optimize the flow of materials and hence of production, it was followed in 2007 by the building of the new goods reception point, including a two-lane waiting area for incoming trucks. In 2008 the steel deck production facility was expanded. A second and up-to-date hot-dip galvanizing facility has been in service since May, thanks to which all steel components are now galvanized in-house to protect them from corrosion and weather effects. With this expansion of its sites, Layher has made a conscious decision in favour of Germany and above all of its region as a location for business. "Thanks to its high degree of automation, our production in Germany is absolutely competitive. Above all, however, we can consistently safeguard the quality of our products here at this location, respond at short notice to special wishes and rely on the long years of experience of our qualified employees, who – like us – have strong roots in this region", says managing partner Georg Layher.
