Ingeniously simple – completely safe: the new Layher “P2 Safety Structure” for rolling towers
As a result of European industrial health and safety legislation, employers must ensure that their employees are provided work equipment which, when used for its intended purpose, guarantees safety and health protection. To this end, appropriate protective measures must be taken, with collective protection from hazards taking priority over individual protection against hazards. In order to satisfy fully all the requirements, Layher has developed the new “P2 Safety Structure”. The P in P2 stands for platforms and 2 for a platform clearance of 2 m. This new and simple assembly principle, which entails the platforms being assembled at a clearance of 2 m, allows the upper and end guardrails to be already slotted in before the decks are fitted. When a worker steps onto the top platform in each case, he is already assured of all-round protection, even during assembly. The design is therefore a safe structure with integral all-round collective protection. For this reason, Layher recommends this structure in preference to the system of securing by means of an advance guard rail or to individual protection by personal safety apparatus against falls, which can only be used starting from a height of 5.75 m. Compared with previous erection instructions, in which the platforms are installed with a clearance of 4 m, this new P2 assembly principle also provides greater stability thanks to additional bracing. In this way the new P2 erection process guarantees the highest standards of safety and ease of use during assembly, alteration and dismantling, between levels, and is comfortable to use during ascent and descent.
Layher has specially developed for the “P2 Safety Structure” the new Uni assembly hook®, a sturdy plastic part which simplifies assembly significantly and ensures quick, and problem-free assembly and dismantling. The principle is simple, quick and safe: first the two lower ladder frames are fitted onto the mobile beam. Depending on the working height required, 1 m or 2 m high ladder frames are used to begin with, making possible all working heights up to max. 13.6 m. For the next level, the Uni assembly hook® is attached to the advanced lower ladder frame and the second ladder frame is positioned on top. This enables the latter to be swung inwards slightly for the purpose of mounting the guardrails onto the top rungs. The second ladder frame is then fitted with the attached guardrail.
Slotting in the first deck is dependent on the height of the bottom ladder frame: either in the mobile beam – at the start with a 1 m frame – or on the 4th rung and hence in the middle of the 2 m ladder frame, if assembly is started with a 2 m frame. For this variant, Layher offers a 0.75 m diagonal brace, as the first platform already begins at a height of 1 m. For every subsequent level, the decks are always inserted in the middle of the 2 m ladder frame, so that the latter projects 1 metre over the platform height and so provides advancing side protection at the ends. Secured by the two guardrails, access to and assembly of the next ladder frames is possible, where finally additional guardrails must be installed at 0.5 m.
In addition to high levels of safety for the users, it was important during development for Layher rolling towers to be retrofittable with the new structure – an advantage to customers who already use a Layher rolling tower. These customers can obtain the P2 structure by purchasing just a few additional components. As an aid, the system scaffolding specialist has completely revised the instructions for assembly and use such that information on ballasting is now shown in clear and simplified form. The new “P2 Safety Structure” is also accompanied by a DVD film, which can be ordered on http://www.layher.com/en/serviceinfo/brochures.asp. It provides a step-by-step explanation of the different safe assembly and dismantling variants. A further benefit of the complete range of rolling towers from Layher catering to every requirement. Thanks to the small number of universally matching and optimum aluminium components, these rolling towers are always easy to assemble, easy to handle and at the same time stable for safe working, even at great heights – both indoors and outdoors. Customers can rely on all this – with the new “P2 Safety Structure” too – thanks to GS certification.
