On rails through the Frauenkirche

The church's foundation (Stiftung Frauenkirche Dresden) sends cleaning and maintenance staff up into the 24 metre high dome twice a year. To do that work in safety, the workers need suitable access. This access should also meet important requirements in addition to the regulations applicable for all scaffolding: Events in the church may not be disrupted even during assembly and dismantling, and any visual impairment of the church's interior must be avoided as far as possible.

For this special application, Layher's engineers devised a solution where an approximately 18 metre high Allround tower can be moved on a circular track. The rails, made of curved scaffolding tubes, were installed segment by segment on the choir by erectors from Grund Gerüstbau GmbH in Heidenau, with spigots to ensure centering at the joints, and ledgers and diagonal braces to maintain the correct radius between the inner and outer rails. The tower can be moved with amazing ease on this substructure.

The materials were transported and assembled during three night shifts by a four-man team. The longest component measured 3.20 m, and felt underlays and wooden sleepers helped to prevent damage to the larch floor. The design had to be in aluminium for weight reasons, and the visually attractive solution greatly impressed the church authorities. In addition to standards and ledgers of light metal, Stalu decks and aluminium toe boards were installed.

The erectors created the basis for the structure with six scaffolding bays. The castors and also the spindles on which the tower stands during the work are mounted on this. The tower tapers upwards into a single bay and thus matches the curvature of the dome's contours. Two anchoring levels, which were already planned for at the 8 metre and 16 metre levels during building of the dome, ensure the necessary stability.

Data, facts and figures
- Height of tower: about 18 metres
- Assembly time: 3 nights
- System: 350 cubic metres of Allround equipment in aluminium
