Refurbishment Work using Layher Equipment at Oberstein Castle

To do so, the scaffolding construction expert René Schwarz from the company Dieter Bornhardt Moderne Gerüstbautechnik, based in Freiberg am Neckar, assembled a wide Allround scaffolding structure. Slightly more than half the surface for scaffolding was designed with a width of 2.07 m, the rest with 1.09 m. The company's employees used Layher briding ledgers for the 2.07 m wide part.

Due to a lack of area to stand on the outside, the company built the scaffolding from the top down as a suspended structure. To do so, the scaffolding erectors first fitted a SpeedyScaf structure on the inside of the castle and over the battlements, and then they passed lattice beams from the inside and over the walls to the outside. The top layer of the Allround scaffolding was then suspended from these lattice beams, and further levels were successively added underneath. The further down the workers got, the more obstacles they met.

These obstacles could not however be bypassed: they had to be integrated into the scaffolding.

This is where René Schwarz's team brought their full experience to bear. It reduced the bay length at one level in order to widen it in the following ones, and used brackets for projections and recesses. Some scaffolding parts are, thanks to the Layher steel deck, only partially covered, since some rock formations extend upwards even inside the scaffolding.

Once all the relevant wall and rock areas had been provided with scaffolding, some standards were continued downwards to their supports, while others were diagonally braced to transmit the loads to adjacent standards. In view of high wind loads, nearly all the connectors were anchored.

Selection of Layher's Allround equipment assured the necessary flexibility for matching the scaffolding perfectly to the irregular contours of this protected castle and of the rock below it.

Bornhardt has been located in Freiberg for nine years now, and specializes in complex scaffolding jobs for protected structures and for building refurbishment. Proprietor René Schwarz and his nine-strong team work mainly in the greater Stuttgart area, but challenging jobs involving protected buildings can come from all over Germany.
