Stairway towers for Euro 2008 football stadiums

In Salzburg, 23 stairway towers were built to a landing height of 10.75 m. They are designed as 16-standard structures for a live load of 5.0 kN/m2 at all levels. The usual anchoring system at every 4 m was not feasible here. The stairway towers are held solely at the upper end by a horizontal steel brace that also doubles as a connecting bridge from the stairway tower to the stadium.

Here in Innsbruck eight of the opposing-direction stairway towers lead to a landing at the 17.5 m level and are dimensioned for a live load of 6.0 kN/m2 at all levels. Up to three of the opposing-direction stairways towers were combined in Innsbruck to form a giant stairway complex. Two stairways, set 180 degrees apart, are entwined and wind upwards. In this case, six stairways are provided in the area normally used by three, ensuring that the large crowds of fans are steered safely from and to the stands. The special feature in Innsbruck is the high load capacity over the high stairway width. The permissible standard loads would be exceeded in this combination even at a low height. For that reason the entire stairway tower is split into three sections, with the higher parts not transferring any standard loads onto the parts underneath them. A 12 meter high steel structure absorbs the proportionate loads and stiifens the free-standing towers.

This hybrid design, in which the standards are on steel supports at the 12 m and 6 m levels, while the stairways are designed continuous, was an idea of the engineering department at Layher. Smart ideas during the planning work were crucial for implementation within a tight schedule, and the required clear height of 2.20 m could also only be assured thanks to Layher's expertise. Using these skills meant that the production of special components was not necessary. In the areas subject to the highest loads, doubled standards were used for load transmission.
